Tell us how you two started dating?

If you can believe it, a friend, who is a lot younger and hipper than me was looking for free
personals in Craigslist.   She decided to look for me instead and found George’s posting.
I had been Internet dating (on paid sites) and been setup by friends so was very skeptical of
“free” postings. Especially with Craigslist reputation of escorts and phishing. But I read the posting
and was blown away. It was articulate, funny, incredibly smart and a little geeky (in a cute
way). If a page of text could be the man I was looking for, this came really close. But NO picture!
I decided to throw caution to the wind and respond anyway. The email I got back was like the
posting. Smart, funny with hints of the man I would fall in love with. And so a conversation turned
into many emails, to finally meeting.
But back to the picture thing. George emailed me that he had been told he looked like Robin
Williams. I immediately asked “Fisher King or Mrs. Doubtfire?” Once I saw the picture I determined that it was “Cadillac Man” because at the time he had a 70’s porn mustache (the first
thing that had to be “changed”!).
The first date was a bit awkward, we had discovered so much about each other it felt like we
were friends. So to kiss or not to kiss. It was not to be, because in fact he fled from my car.
Which led to more letters (and teasing), more disclosures and a closer relationship. We
became friends first, because of those letters, and that was incredibly powerful.

Tell us how you got engaged?

We had been talking about moving in for a while. I was hesitant. George said that he had one
rule – if we were married, we’d have to live in the same house! He moved in July 31st. We
started talking about getting an engagement ring (because I had to choose it – my requirement).
He told me I had a window to choose the ring but I didn’t know what that window was. I really
couldn’t find a ring in the right price range, and felt weird looking for one, so let it go for a while.

On September 29th we had planned a nice dinner. Sparkling wine, barbecued steak and some
“us” time. I came home and he met me at the door (as he always does) and said “come outside
to the deck”. The champagne flutes were there. He had me sit down, poured the champagne
and said the most incredible things to me (which of course I can’t remember because I was getting
engaged!!!!). He spoke about the peace he felt on the deck, with me and how happy his life
was with me in it.

Then he said since I couldn’t choose a ring, he had four for me to choose from. He opened a box
to reveal four “ring-pops” in four flavours. I chose the cherry one!

He asked me to marry him two years to the day that we said “I love you” out loud to each other.
That was his window. The most beautiful picture window I could ever imagine.

Tell us a little on how you would like to have your wedding and your vision of it?

When we got engaged, we didn’t talk about a date. But when I thought about it, I wanted to get
married soon. My dad had been diagnosed with cancer about a year before and although he is
doing well, we want him to be there – a long engagement didn’t make sense.

We decided on the end of April because George will be finished school and it’s a good time to
take a break before he goes back to work full time.

I have always loved the Enoch Turner School House in Toronto. It’s the first “free” school in
Toronto and it is the oldest school still standing in the city. The original one-room school was built
in 1848. As soon as we decided on a date, I called to see if it was available and it was.

We are going with a vintage school feel, because George has gone back to school (Law),
collects old books and I collect vintage school globes, games and maps. It all works together
very well.
We want a small-ish wedding – including our loved ones and good friends. George’s daughters
will walk him down the aisle, which is a testament to how amazing they are. My sister will be my
Maid of Honour and the rest of the family will have special roles as well.

We thought a cocktail party would be more fun and there would be more mingling. We want to
enjoy the moments and not be stressed out about details. If the people we love are there, really
that’s the most important thing.

Thank-you for your submission into the contest Karen + George. Best of luck to you in the contest and your wedding planning!

Regards,

Sarah Wright
