| Couple: Emma + Robert | Wedding Date: August 24th, 2012|
Tell us how you two started dating?
It started with a trip to the CNE. It was August 25, 2007, and we lived in the same neighbourhood and decided after chatting over MSN to meet up for a day at the Ex. We were both new to our area and hadn’t really met friends in our area, so I went into this hoping to gain a new friend at the very least. We spent the day at the park, followed by dinner at my apartment. Unfortunately, my oven chose the perfect time to break down (and I had to interrupt my landlord’s party to try and get a working oven for my roasted potatoes and chicken). Let’s just say the potatoes were delicious, though the chicken was a terrible blackened mess (and yet he stuck around)! We quickly moved from friends into a relationship, and for our 5th anniversary we will be married and heading out on our honeymoon!
Tell us how you got engaged?
The time leading up to the proposal is a funny story, in hind sight (certainly not during though)! It was meant to happen while we were away on vacation during the last week of August in 2010. Robert carefully hid the ring in his (checked!) luggage, locking everything up, hiding it in amongst our donation items, and proudly proclaimed he was ready to go!
The plan had been to go on a sunset cruise in Cuba, and at the right moment, he was going to whip out the ring for a heartfelt proposal (though he claims that a “no” would have resulted in a push into the ocean).
Unfortunately, life has a way of changing plans unexpectedly! When we arrived at the Camaguey airport, my bright pink luggage was seen pretty quickly, making its way around the carousel. Rob’s should have been pretty close, but never made its entrance…
Cue the panic.
I wasn’t exactly the most supportive girlfriend, as I reminded Rob that it wasn’t that big of a deal, since it was just clothes and donations.
Note to self: Don’t repeat this daily as luggage continues to be missing, especially when an engagement ring is locked up.
The good news is that the luggage *was* found, on September 12, and we were able to get it delivered before I left for work on September 13. That night, Rob came into the kitchen while I was standing at the sink, and proposed then. By this point, he just wanted to get it over with!
For those of you wondering why he didn’t pack it in his carry-on, Rob was concerned that:
a) he would be stopped at the airport and his luggage would be opened
b) I would start putting things away and discover the ring when we arrived.
Lesson to be learned: don’t pack valuables in checked luggage!
Tell us a little on how you would like to have your wedding and your vision of it?
Emma’s vision for the wedding is something fun, bright and colourful. However, Rob’s vision is much more toned down, so we are trying to figure out how to best showcase both our personalities in a fun way. We are aiming for around 80 to 90 guests, and want elements that are unique, which is in part why we decided on a beautiful historic building over a banquet hall. We are hoping that the weather allows us to have our ceremony and photos outside, while the reception will be held in the ballroom inside.
